Tension & Release

Simply put, music is about tension and release. The name for that in music is called a cadence. If you've ever sung the words "amen," you've used cadence.

Composers learn which tones create tension and which tones release that tension, as well as other ways to manipulate the tension and release cycle. Sometimes delaying the release (in music terms, called a suspension) builds the tension and then misdirects the release.

Cycles & Patterns

There are cycles, patterns, and orderings that create music. In music that's often referred to as the cycle of fifths or fourths.

The 24 hours in a day, the 12 months of the year (which correlate to the 12 keys of music), the seven notes that make up a scale (which correlate to the days of the week), and the Trinity number three, which is what makes up the basic vehicle of music, the triad chord.

Sound & Emotion

Sound and vibration stimulate our brains to create emotions. This is why music moves us so deeply—it's a direct pathway to our emotional centers.

We exist in rhythm. Think of your heartbeat—that's the first sound we hear as we're developing in the womb, the steady rhythm of a heartbeat. So when people say, "I can't keep a beat to save my life, I'm not musical," I laugh inside because I know how untrue that is.

Music is Everywhere

This pattern is found everywhere. Think of a wave crashing on the shore—there's a buildup of the wave, the cresting, and then the crashing of the wave, and then the receding of the water to build up the next wave. Music works the same way.

There are other patterns and cycles. Think of day and night, sleeping and waking, the seasons—spring, summer, winter, fall—and it repeats. There are examples everywhere. Music occurs everywhere.

Most African cultures consider dancing as simple as walking. Music is innate in our lives. And in our process to understand, we mostly overcomplicate and confuse.
